WYOMING
Trip Snippets:
Airfare: NONE. This is a quick few-hour drive from Salt Lake City, and an amazing weekend getaway.
Transportation: We used our truck for this trip to carry the camping gear and the kayaks. The trip can be done with any kind of vehicle though, just depends what you want to bring.
Hotels: There are a bunch of incredible hotels in the Jackson Hole / Yellowstone area. However, most of them are pretty expensive. So unless you’re rich or loaded with credit card points, we recommend camping. We camped for this trip because we enjoy it, and the area is too beautiful to be spent cooped up in a building. You can pay for a camping spot (like we did) in more developed areas, or you can backpack into the backcountry and camp wherever. If you backpack around, make sure you’re prepared for the wildlife and nature conditions.
Food: Lots of good restaurants in the area. Good home-cooking, American food. There are plenty of grocery stores as well which we used to stock up and then cook meals at parks and our campsite.
Activities: We toured of a few of the National Park sites, but mostly enjoyed the solitude of the kayaks on the lake. The best hidden spot in the park is to take Teton Park Road until you hit Spalding Bay Road. Be sure you look up the location on maps beforehand because the road itself isn’t marked once you’re out there. The road also isn’t paved, so you’ll want to have either an SUV or Truck that can handle a dirt road and some potholes. Follow this road to the end where it pops out to a small parking lot and boat ramp area into Jackson Lake. It’s not very well known, so it’s never that busy. We recommend getting there shortly before sunset though, and you’ll enjoy a spectacular view of the sunset under the towering Tetons. (Yes, this is where our dog got his name from)
